Tripura is fully prepared to celebrate the annual Rath Yatra festival beginning June 27, with a week of religious festivities planned throughout the state. The primary celebrations will take place in Agartala and Melaghar, though several other towns and marketplaces are also expected to observe the occasion with great enthusiasm and devotion.
The Rath Yatra commemorates the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra from their main temple to the Gundicha temple, traditionally regarded as their aunt’s residence. With deep cultural and spiritual roots, the festival is one of the most significant events in the Hindu calendar.
According to West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar K, permissions have been granted for six to seven Rath Yatras across the district. The major processions will be organized by ISKCON Agartala, Hare Krishna Temple, and the Jagannath Ji Temple managed by Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math. Security arrangements will be tight, with personnel from the CRPF, Tripura State Rifles, and Tripura Police deployed to ensure public safety and crowd control.
All chariots have undergone thorough inspections. To maintain safety standards, no metallic components are allowed on the exteriors, and the maximum height of each chariot’s pinnacle has been capped at five metres.
To ease traffic during the processions, Tripura Police has issued comprehensive route plans and traffic diversions. The ISKCON chariot will proceed from Purbasha to the ISKCON Temple, passing through Old Motor Stand, Kaman Chowmuhani, RS Bhavan, Women’s College, and B.K Road before returning.
The Jagannath Ji Temple procession will travel from the temple to RS Bhavan via Tulsibati School and B.K Chowmuhani, while the Hare Krishna Temple chariot will move from Ashram Chowmuhani to Prantik Club through Chittaranjan Road and Kalyani.
Commuters are advised to use alternative routes, including:
