Monsoon alert: Howrah river embankments reinforced ahead of heavy rains

With the monsoon gathering force over the Bay of Bengal, the irrigation department has completed emergency reinforcement of critical embankments along the Howrah river, which cuts through the heart of Agartala.

Engineers have installed 14,000 sandbags and three new water-level sensors upstream at Chumang. The Tripura State Disaster Management Authority has asked low-lying colonies near the river to stay alert, while schools in two blocks of West Tripura will remain closed if rainfall crosses the 200mm threshold.

River systems across the state — the Gomati, Howrah, Manu and Khowai — are being monitored round the clock.
