In a session marked by rare cross-party consensus, the Tripura Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a bill making Kokborok a compulsory subject in all government schools up to class VIII.
The legislation, drafted after two years of consultation with tribal councils and language academies, also establishes a Kokborok Language Commission to standardise the Roman script and train teachers.
“Language is the vessel of a people’s memory,” said the education minister during the debate. The bill’s passage was greeted with celebrations outside the assembly, where tribal students performed traditional chwma dances.
