Dharali, Uttarakhand | August 5, 2025 –A devastating cloudburst struck Dharali village in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, unleashing flash floods that wreaked havoc across the region. The sudden deluge led to widespread destruction—sweeping away homes, vehicles, and trees—leaving at least five people dead and dozens more trapped.
Flash Floods Follow Sudden Cloudburst
The cloudburst, which occurred early in the morning, triggered torrential flash floods in the area. The water surged through the village, flattening everything in its path. Rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration, were immediately dispatched to the site.
By Tuesday night, five bodies had been recovered, while efforts to locate missing individuals were ongoing. Emergency crews worked around the clock, navigating through mudslides, blocked roads, and unpredictable water currents.
Landslides Block Roads, Hamper Rescue
The torrential rains and ensuing landslides blocked arterial roads leading into Dharali, cutting off access and delaying the arrival of heavy machinery and supplies. Officials reported that several homes were destroyed, and dozens of villagers remained stranded in remote areas awaiting evacuation.
An SDRF official stated, “We are focusing on both rescue and relief. Roads are severely damaged, making access difficult. Helicopter support may be requested if weather permits.”
Weather Alert for Himachal Pradesh
In light of this severe weather event, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for neighboring Himachal Pradesh, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state over the next 48 hours. Residents and tourists have been advised to exercise caution, avoid areas prone to landslides, and stay informed about local advisories.
Government Response
Uttarakhand Chief Minister has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that all possible help is being provided. Financial assistance for the affected families and emergency relief for the displaced have been announced.
“Our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. Relief and rescue operations are underway with full force. We are monitoring the situation closely,” the Chief Minister stated.
Monsoon Fury Continues
The incident is the latest in a series of monsoon-related disasters to hit the Himalayan region this season. Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, both prone to landslides and flash floods during the monsoon months, have been witnessing intensified weather patterns in recent years, attributed by experts to climate change and unregulated development in fragile ecological zones.
Ongoing Rescue and Precaution
Authorities have urged people in vulnerable areas to remain alert and to follow instructions issued by the district administration. Rescue operations are expected to continue through Wednesday, with further rainfall predicted in the region.
