The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently issued a directive to all higher educational institutions (HEIs) under its purview, mandating a full refund of fees for students who cancel or withdraw their admissions within a specified period. This move is part of the UGC’s efforts to enforce the provisions of the UGC Act and ensure fair practices in higher education.

According to the new policy, HEIs must refund the full amount of fees for all cancellations or migrations of students up to September 30, with only a nominal processing fee of no more than Rs 1,000 being deducted for refunds processed up to October 31, 2024. This policy aims to alleviate financial burdens on students and parents, especially in light of grievances regarding fee refunds.

The UGC has emphasized that strict adherence to this fee refund policy is mandatory for the 2023-24 academic session. Institutions failing to comply with this directive may face punitive action. The commission’s decision underscores its commitment to student welfare and the enforcement of regulatory provisions to maintain transparency and accountability within the higher education sector.

This initiative is expected to benefit a significant number of students across the country, providing them with financial flexibility and peace of mind during the admission process.
