Twin Earthquakes Jolt Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Region; No Casualties or Tsunami Threat

New Delhi, July 30 – Two significant undersea earthquakes struck the Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands region in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting close monitoring by seismological agencies, though no damage or tsunami warnings have been issued.

The first tremor, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 12:11 am IST in the Bay of Bengal, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, with its epicentre located at latitude 6.82°N and longitude 93.37°E.

Shortly afterward, a stronger earthquake of 6.5 magnitude struck the Nicobar Islands region at 12:12 am IST (18:42 GMT, Monday). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake’s epicentre was approximately 259 km west-northwest of Sabang, in Indonesia’s Aceh province, again at a depth of 10 km.

Despite the high magnitude of both tremors, no casualties or structural damage have been reported so far. Authorities also confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to India or neighboring countries.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, particularly in coastal and island regions, but emphasize that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
