Tripura Tribal Council Plans Village-Level Survey to Detect Illegal Migrants from Bangladesh

Agartala, July 29 — In a significant move aimed at protecting indigenous communities, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is preparing to launch a village-level survey to identify and prevent the settlement of illegal migrants from Bangladesh in areas under its jurisdiction.

Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma announced the development, stating that the survey will be a proactive step to address concerns of demographic change in tribal areas due to unauthorized migration.

“The committee will visit villages under the TTAADC and inspect the local population to identify illegal migrants who may have settled in recent years. This is necessary to safeguard the rights, culture, and demographic integrity of indigenous people,” Debbarma said.

Tipra Motha, which currently holds 13 seats in the 60-member Tripura Legislative Assembly, has also formally requested the Election Commission of India to carry out an intensive voter roll verification exercise in Tripura, similar to what was undertaken in Bihar.

Party leaders have consistently expressed concern that unchecked migration from across the international border is posing a serious threat to the tribal population, potentially impacting their political representation, land rights, and cultural heritage.

The proposed survey and inspection committee is expected to collaborate with local bodies, village councils, and law enforcement agencies to ensure transparency and accuracy in the identification process.
