Two trucks, one of which was of the Indian Air Force, came under intense terrorist fire in the Surankote area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, resulting in the death of one soldier and the injuries of five others, according to reports. It is said that one airman is critically injured out of the five. According to sources, they were all evacuated to the Command Hospital in Udhampur for additional care.
Counterterrorism actions are in progress and reinforcements have been dispatched to the region. According to security forces sources, “the local Rashtriya Rifles unit started cordon and search operations in the area.”
The IAF declared on X that it had secured its convoy after it was attacked close to Shahsitar. “Militants ambushed a convoy of Indian Air Force vehicles in the Poonch area of J&K, close to Shahsitar. Currently, nearby military forces are conducting search and cordon operations in the region. More research is being conducted, and the convoy has been secured,” the statement stated.
According to officials, the servicemen were ambushed while traveling from Jaranwali to the air force station at around 6:15 p.m., as reported by news agency PTI.
In a region where there were several terror strikes on the army last year, this is the first significant attack on the military forces this year. Images from the aftermath of the incident revealed that the car that was shot at had at least twelve bullet holes in its windscreen.
According to officials, the terrorists—who were carrying AK assault rifles—are thought to have taken refuge in the surrounding forests. To date, there has been no communication with the terrorists.
Police and paramilitary forces conducted searches in Poonch, part of the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency, following suspected person movements, but no arrests were made.
