STATE: Storms and heavy rains are also likely to occur in the state under the influence of Cyclone ‘Remal,’ formed by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The state administration is prepared to deal with the emerging situation completely. All precautionary measures have been taken in this regard. Besides, the district magistrates have also been instructed to make all preparations to deal with the situation.
In a press conference at the Secretariat on Sunday, Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey highlighted various steps taken by the government to deal with possible cyclones and heavy rains in the state under the influence of Remal. He said that considering the potential intensity of the cyclone, a meeting of the State Executive Committee of Tripura Disaster Management Authority was held on an urgent basis at the Secretariat today under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary.
Director General Amitabh Ranjan, Chief Minister’s Secretary Dr. P. K. Chakraborty, along with the principal secretaries of various departments, secretaries, director of India Metrological Department, representative of NDRF force, director of MBB Airport, and others were present. The meeting reviewed the overall weather forecast situation in the state and took necessary decisions.
In a press conference, Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey said that schools, educational institutions, and Anganwadi centers in the state will remain closed on May 27 and 28, considering the possibility of cyclone and heavy rains.
The transport department has been advised to coordinate with railways, airport authorities, and road transport to ensure public safety. Besides, concerned authorities have been asked to inform the public if air, rail, and other transport will be delayed or canceled.
A team of NDRF has been ordered to be sent to South and Gomati districts to deal with any possible situation. Besides, SDRF teams have also been asked to be ready. The food department has been asked to ensure the stock of food and daily necessities. The secretary said that the fisheries department has also been asked to take necessary measures to warn the fishermen of the state.
State Director of India Metrological Department Partha Roy, at the press conference, said that due to the impact of the cyclone, there is a possibility of heavy rains and storms in different parts of the state from May 26 to May 29. He said that warning signals have been issued in this regard in various districts of the state for the next 3 days.
In a press conference, the MBB Airport Director said that all flights on the Kolkata-Agartala route have been canceled till 9 am on May 27 as an early warning due to the cyclone. However, Delhi, Bangalore, and Guwahati flight services remain normal. Air traffic-related information will be notified from time to time by concerned authorities. The public is requested to contact the airlines or airport authorities as per the situation. The secretary said that the state administration is fully prepared to deal with any situation. He urged people not to panic unnecessarily.
