Kaziranga National Park in Assam has recently become the new home of an extraordinary discovery, the Salazar Pit Viper, scientifically known as Trimeresurus Salazar. Named after the infamous Salazar Slytherin from the popular Harry Potter series, this venomous snake is a testament to the wonders of nature.

The Salazar Pit Viper is distinguished by its heat-sensing pit organs between the eye and nostril, allowing it to detect warm-blooded prey. Its striking green coloration, reminiscent of magical forests, is complemented by a distinctive red-orange stripe on its head, making it a truly unique species.

This new species was first identified a few years ago in Arunachal Pradesh by researchers from Bengaluru’s National Centre for Biological Sciences and the Bombay Natural History Society. Their findings were later published in an issue of Zoosystematics and Evolution. The discovery of the Salazar Pit Viper adds to the growing list of reptilian species identified in the northeastern state, marking it as the fifth discovery in just over a year.

Assam’s wildlife enthusiasts celebrated this magical find, bringing a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. The Salazar Pit Viper is a fascinating addition to the region’s biodiversity and a symbol of the importance of preserving and studying our environment. The discovery has sparked excitement and renewed interest in the rich wildlife of Kaziranga National Park and beyond.
