Cargo service has commenced again at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport with the inauguration of the newly built Air Cargo Terminal. The new cargo building has been built at the cost of Rs 17 crore approximately, in an area of 1 thousand 272 square meters. 
 
The cargo building, with the capacity of around a total of 40 thousand 150 MT goods, would be transported throughout the year, which is 10 times more in quantity than that in the past. The services will primarily be provided by Indigo Airlines.
 
While inaugurating the new Cargo building on Friday at Airport premises, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said soon after taking over new responsibility, the quick commencing of different services is on emphasis. To achieve this very goal, the cargo services and prepaid auto services have commenced today at the airport. The Minister thanked Indigo Airlines authority for providing such a service and expressed his hope for other airlines to come forward for the same. He said the businessman of the state has had to face several difficulties. The Minister hopes that the recommencement of cargo service will benefit businessmen of the state.
 
Minister Sushanta Chowdhury expressed his hope for everything to go well for the Agartala-Chittagong airline services to begin in the first week of June. Later, steps will be taken to start direct airline services from Agartala to Singapore, Bangkok, and other destinations. 
He also stated that, as it was not easy to move Maharaja’s statue from the old airport, a new bronze statue of Maharaja Bir Bikram has been built at the cost of Rs 35 lakh approximately. It is to be noted that the new cargo building has a facility for the storage of perishable and non-perishable goods, hazardous goods, and cold storage.
 
Secretary of Transport Department Uttam Kumar Chakma, Director of Airport Authority K. S. Meena, West Tripura DM & Collector Debapriya Bardhan, and Commissioner of Transport Department Subrata Choudhury were present for the inauguration.
