Meghalaya Tightens Tourist Safety After Shocking ‘Honeymoon Murder’

Guwahati – In the wake of the chilling murder of a honeymooning husband by his wife in Meghalaya, authorities in the East Khasi Hills district have introduced a strict new safety rule: all tourists must now hire authorised guides for trekking activities.

The move comes after a tragic incident involving a couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which initially sparked fears of a missing persons case but later unraveled into a shocking homicide. The crime took place at the remote and picturesque Wei Sawdong Falls, one of the state’s top tourist spots.

Before the woman confessed to the killing, the story went viral online, with many social media users questioning the safety of visiting Meghalaya and the Northeast region as a whole. The incident not only rocked public sentiment but also damaged the reputation of one of India’s most scenic and serene tourist destinations.

Local businesses, especially in popular areas like Cherrapunjee (Sohra), reported a wave of panic among visitors. “Guests started asking if it’s safe to drive alone or step out at night,” a resort owner told NDTV. Some even canceled reservations, fearing for their safety.

To rebuild trust and ensure future visitors feel secure, the District Tourism Promotion Society has now made it mandatory to trek with recognised, licensed guides in the region.

East Khasi Hills, known for its lush waterfalls, living root bridges, and vibrant culture, draws the largest number of tourists in the entire Northeast. The new rule is aimed at safeguarding not just visitors, but also the region’s image as a safe, welcoming travel destination.

With the spotlight on tourist safety, Meghalaya is now taking firm steps to restore confidence and protect its natural treasures — and those who come to explore them.
