NATIONAL: In a significant development for the Indian Army, the government has announced the appointment of Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, as the next Chief of the Army Staff. The appointment will take effect from the afternoon of June 30, 2024.
Lt Gen Dwivedi, who is currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, brings with him a distinguished career spanning over 39 years. His extensive experience in various command and strategic roles has been instrumental in his rise through the ranks.
Born on July 1, 1964, Lt Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. Throughout his service, he has held numerous command appointments including Command of Regiment (18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), Inspector General, Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.
In his current role as Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief (Headquarters Northern Command) from 2022-2024, Lt Gen Dwivedi has demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. His academic credentials include an M Phil in Defence & Management Studies and two Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
The government’s decision to appoint Lt Gen Dwivedi comes at a time when India continues to face complex security challenges. His vast operational experience in dealing with China and Pakistan is expected to be a valuable asset in his new role.
As Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi prepares to take over from the incumbent Chief of the Army Staff, Gen Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, who will demit office on June 30, 2024, there is a sense of anticipation about the direction he will steer the Indian Army towards.
