NEW DELHI — The nation came together in a vibrant display of unity and pride as India celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Thursday. The historic Red Fort in the capital was adorned with the tricolour, serving as the focal point of the celebrations, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation with a rousing 103-minute speech.
The event began with the ceremonial unfurling of the national flag, accompanied by the resonating notes of the national anthem played by the armed forces’ bands. A 21-gun salute marked the moment, paying tribute to the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who paved the way for the country’s independence in 1947.
