The Indian men’s hockey team will be vying for bronze in the Olympics for the second time in a row after losing to world champion Germany in Tuesday’s semi-final match of the Paris 2024 Olympics. India, which is ranked fifth in hockey, took the lead right away in the first quarter thanks to a penalty corner (7′) from Harmanpreet Singh. But Gonzalo Peillat (18′) helped World No. 2 Germany fight back, and Christopher Ruehr (27′) handed them the lead.
India, the bronze medalists from Tokyo 2020, tied the score with a goal from Sukhjeet Singh (36′), but Marco Miltkau’s goal (54′), scored six minutes before the final whistle, kept India from competing in the Olympic men’s hockey final for the first time since Moscow 1980.
Spain and India will compete for the bronze medal. The Netherlands easily defeated World No. 8 Spain 4-0 in their semifinal match.
NaIndia got off to a strong start at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in Colombes, winning the first penalty corner of the game in less than two minutes. Goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneebrg made a stop against Harmanpreet, and then India’s PR Sreejesh saved from Marco Miltkau.
