India, with its rich and diverse fisheries resources, plays a significant role in global fish production. As the second-largest fish-producing country, India contributes approximately 8% to the world’s fish production. Additionally, it ranks second in aquaculture production and is a major shrimp producer and exporter. These achievements result from transformative initiatives aimed at holistic development in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Recognizing the immense potential of the fisheries and aquaculture sector, the Government of India (GoI) has approved substantial investments totaling ₹38,572 crore. These investments include financial assistance for impactful projects through various schemes. The Blue Revolution Scheme has been allocated ₹5,000 crore, while the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) will receive ₹7,522 crore. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) has been granted ₹20,050 crore, and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Samridhi Sah Yojana (PM-MKSSY), a sub-scheme under PMMSY approved in February 2024, will receive ₹6,000 crore.

To engage with states and union territories, showcase the contributions of fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and fishermen, and raise awareness about GoI initiatives, the Fisheries Summer Meet 2024 is scheduled for July 12th, 2024, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This event, organized by the Department of Fisheries (DoF), will witness the participation of Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, along with other dignitaries.

The Fisheries Summer Meet 2024 brought together fish farmers, researchers, industry experts, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to share experiences and explore prospects for sustainable fisheries development. The event focused on the achievements of various program schemes, with special emphasis on the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Key highlights included deliberations with leadership from states and union territories aimed to enhance collaboration and drive progress in the fisheries sector.

In a major boost to the fisheries sector, the Centre will inaugurate more than 125 projects worth over ₹100 crore during the event. These initiatives aim to enhance livelihoods, promote responsible fishing practices, and ensure the long-term well-being of our aquatic ecosystems.
