In a stunning turn of events, Indian wrestling sensation Vinesh Phogat, who was on the brink of clinching a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, has been disqualified from the competition. Competing in the 50kg freestyle wrestling category, Vinesh was eliminated due to her weight exceeding the permissible limit.

Typically competing in the 53kg class, Vinesh made a rigorous effort to drop to 50kg for the Paris Games. Despite her best efforts, including skipping meals, intense running sessions, and staying awake through the night, her weight on Day 2 of the weigh-in was found to be just 100 grams over the limit.

Indian authorities had sought additional time from the Olympic committee in hopes of addressing the slight overage, but their pleas were in vain. The rules allow no exceptions, regardless of how small the margin.

Vinesh had previously made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic wrestling final. Unfortunately, her journey at the Paris Games has taken an unexpected turn. On Wednesday morning, it was revealed that she was overweight by a mere 100 grams. Despite the narrow margin, regulations dictated her disqualification.

An Indian coach confirmed the heartbreaking news: “She weighed an additional 100 grams this morning. She has been disqualified since the rules do not permit this.”

Vinesh’s disqualification means she will return home without a medal from the Paris Olympics, despite her initial promise of winning silver. This setback is a significant blow, but her determination and spirit will undoubtedly drive her future endeavors in the sport.
