Deep Ocean Mission: Indian Aquanauts Achieve Record 5,000-Metre Dive

New Delhi: India has created history in undersea exploration with its aquanauts successfully diving beyond 5,000 metres in the North Atlantic Ocean, marking a major milestone in the nation’s ambitious Deep Ocean Mission (Samudrayaan).

The achievement comes shortly after an Indian astronaut visits the International Space Station, underscoring the country’s growing presence in both space and ocean exploration.

The deep-sea expedition was conducted earlier this month in collaboration with France, using the French submersible Nautile. Two Indian aquanauts completed separate record-breaking dives, showcasing India’s preparedness for extreme undersea missions.

Officials said the feat represents a critical step towards the Deep Ocean Mission, which aims to explore mineral resources, biodiversity, and ecosystems hidden in the depths of the ocean. Apart from scientific goals, the project is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities in marine technology and sustainable resource use.

With this achievement, India joins a select group of nations with proven expertise in manned deep-sea missions, advancing its dual quest of “exploring space above and the oceans below.”
