NATIONAL: The Central Hall of the Old Parliament building was renamed as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’ on Tuesday.

The announcement to rename Central Hall as “Samvidhan Sadan” was made by the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during the maiden session of the Rajya Sabha in the new parliament building.

In his announcement, the VP said, “I wish to indicate to the Hon’ble Members that keeping in view all the situations and after I have had interaction with the Hon’ble speaker, the Central Hall where we had a joint session this morning will be known henceforth as ‘Samvidhan Sadan.’

Earlier, the Prime Minister requested the Vice President and Speaker to rename the central hall ‘Samvidhan Sadan’ during his speech in the Central Hall on the special session of the old Parliament building.

“We are shifting to the new Parliament building. It is an auspicious day, it is Ganesh Chaturthi,” he said, addressing a function held in the Central Hall to commemorate the rich legacy of the Parliament of India, “My suggestion is that as we are going to the new building, the glory of this building should never decline. It should not be called just the old Parliament… It can be named Samvidhan Sadan,” PM Modi said.

Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Tuesday gathered at the historic Central Hall of the old Parliament building for the function.
