STATE: According to a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official on Wednesday, the organization wants to finish electrifying the railway track from Lumding to Sabroom in Tripura by the end of August.
He stated that 165 of the 265 km of the track from Dharmanagar to Sabroom via Agartala has already been electrified, with the remaining 100 km will be completed by August of this year.
Over the phone with PTI, NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Sabyasachi De stated that the electrification project from Lumding to Badarpur (172 km), which is regarded as a hilly area, has also advanced well, with 85% of the work completed.
The northeastern railway network has been strengthened by electrifying about 65% of the rails that are under the NFR. According to him, there is a continuous push to electrify 55% of Assamese railway tracks.
He stated that efforts are on to speed up the electrification project and that once the current work from Lumding to Sabroom via Agartala is completed, premier trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat may be introduced up to Agartala.
De stated that NFR intends to phase out diesel-run trains gradually and added that operating electric trains will be advantageous as it will significantly reduce diesel expenses.
He said that electric train operation is more profitable than diesel engine operation. The NFR will benefit from the new technology, which will also be reasonably priced. Once trains switch to electric power, carbon emissions will also decrease.
He further stated that the conversion of Dharmanagar, Udaipur, and Kumarghat railway stations into Amrit Bharat stations will cost Rs 93 crore, meanwhile, the Agartala station will receive Rs 260 crore to become a world-class facility. PTI
