Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, M. Riaz Hamidullah, arrived in Agartala on Friday, August 1, 2025, for a three-day official visit to the northeastern state of Tripura, according to a senior official.
During his stay, Mr. Hamidullah is scheduled to hold meetings with Governor N. Indrasena Reddy and Chief Minister Manik Saha.
As part of the itinerary, the High Commissioner will visit the Agartala Integrated Check Post (ICP) and the Akhaura Land Port located across the border in Bangladesh.
On Saturday, August 2, Mr. Hamidullah is expected to travel from the Akhaura ICP to Ashuganj port via Bangladeshi territory. He will also inspect the Nischintapur Railway Station, which is a critical component of the Agartala-Akhaura rail link.
This cross-border railway project saw a successful technical trial run in September 2023 on the newly built tracks connecting Gangasagar in Bangladesh to Nischintapur in Tripura. However, the project’s launch was delayed due to a sudden political shift in Bangladesh.
The envoy is also scheduled to visit Sabroom in South Tripura to assess the Maitri Setu bridge that links Sabroom with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated the Maitri Setu in March 2021, the project has remained non-operational due to political changes in Dhaka.
