Three Indians have been detained by Canadian police, who stated on Friday that they are believed to have been a member of the assassination team that killed Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year.
Following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations of “Indian agents” playing a role in Nijjar’s murder last year, the killing had become the focal point of a diplomatic spat between India and Canada. The accusation was dismissed by India as “absurd” and “motivated”.
Superintendent Mandeep Mooker, the head of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, stated that the three Indians who were detained were non-permanent residents of Alberta for a period of three to five years: Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28. Also, the cops have made their images public.According to court documents, they have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The suspects’ potential connections to the Indian government were being looked into, according to the police, who added that none of them had been known to them before.
Assistant Commissioner David Teboul of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stated at a press conference on Friday that the murder is still “very much under active investigation.”
Canadian citizen Nijjar was killed in Surrey on June 18, 2023, on terror charges. Trudeau’s charge against India sparked a row between the two countries, with both expelling diplomats of the other country.
Trudeau criticized Nijjar’s killing as a “problem” that he couldn’t ignore, while India criticized Canada for allowing separatism, extremism, and violence, affecting India-Canada relations and causing crime.
