The Indian government has given preliminary approval for constructing the Amaravati Outer Ring Road (ORR), a transformative 189 km expressway designed to enhance regional connectivity and promote economic development in Andhra Pradesh. This ambitious project will become a cornerstone in the state’s infrastructure landscape.

The Amaravati ORR is a proposed 6-lane access-controlled road encircling Andhra Pradesh’s new capital city, Amaravati. It aims to link key cities and regions, including Vijayawada, Guntur, and Tenali, forming an integral part of the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA)’s 2050 master plan.

The expressway, spanning 189 km, will consist of six lanes and traverse 22 Mandals, covering 87 villages. It will feature a controlled-access divided highway with a 150 m right-of-way (RoW), incorporating three tunnels, nine interchanges, and two bridges over the Krishna River. This Outer Ring Road (ORR) will link major expressways, national highways, state highways, and the Machilipatnam Port, significantly improving regional transportation networks.

The project is currently in the proposal stage. Detailed project reports (DPRs) are being prepared to finalize the alignment and land acquisition. Tender notices for construction work are pending.

The total cost, including land acquisition and construction, is estimated to be between ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 crores.

Upon completion, the Amaravati ORR will dramatically improve transportation efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity for residents and businesses. This project is poised to play a crucial role in supporting the growth of Amaravati as a vibrant and sustainable capital city.
