Air India has lowered the amount of free baggage that may be checked in for domestic flights in the lowest economy fare category from 20 kg to 15 kg. The Tata Group-owned airline Air India announced the adjustments as part of its menu-based pricing model ticket families last August, claiming that a one-size-fits-all strategy is no longer optimal.

Before the fee families idea, travelers on domestic flights operated by Air India could check in up to 25 kg of luggage for free, while passengers on domestic flights operated by IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet could only check in up to 15 kg of luggage for free.

According to an Air India representative on Saturday, the three fare groups—Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex—offer different degrees of perks and tariff limits at different pricing points.

According to an announcement from the airline, effective May 2, the free check-in luggage allowance for the “Comfort” and “Comfort Plus” categories has been lowered from 20 kg and 25 kg, respectively.

“The ‘Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’ fare families now offer 15 kg of baggage allowance on domestic routes, while the ‘Flex’ fare family offers 25 kg. On internal itineraries, the Business Class baggage allowance is between 25 and 35 kilos. Market-specific differences exist in the free baggage allowance for overseas travel,” an airline representative stated.

The representative further emphasized that taking into account the variety of traveler preferences, fare families are intended to let travelers choose the fares and services that best meet their needs.
