NATIONAL: In a tragic loss to Indian politics, veteran leader and CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away today at the age of 72. Yechury, who had been a towering figure in Indian political discourse and an unwavering advocate for leftist ideologies, breathed his last after a prolonged illness, leaving the nation in shock and mourning.

Yechury’s demise was confirmed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in an official statement, expressing deep sorrow at the loss of their beloved comrade. The leader had been under treatment for several health complications in recent months and had withdrawn from public engagements due to his declining health.

Known for his articulate debates, tireless dedication to workers’ rights, and staunch opposition to neoliberal policies, Yechury’s political career spanned over four decades. As a prominent student leader at Jawaharlal Nehru University in the 1970s, he joined the CPI(M) and quickly rose through the ranks. His contribution to the leftist movement, particularly in Tripura and West Bengal, where the CPI(M) has historically been strong, remains unparalleled.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and several political figures across party lines expressed their condolences.
