STATE: In an unprecedented effort to bolster the state’s green cover, Tripura today achieved a remarkable feat by planting 5 lakh saplings in just 5 minutes. The mass tree plantation drive, inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, underscores the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability and afforestation. Speaking at the event held in Taranagar, Mohanpur, Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the collective responsibility to preserve nature for future generations. “Nature and environment are for everyone. We have much to learn from nature, and it is our duty to ensure a beautiful environment for our future generations,” he stated.

The initiative highlights Tripura’s leading role in afforestation among the northeastern states. The Chief Minister lauded the state’s consistent efforts, noting the significant increase in the number of saplings planted each year: from 1 lakh in 2022 to 2 lakh in 2023 and now a record-breaking 5 lakh this year. “Such campaigns are vital and innovative. As this message spreads across India, Tripura will be recognized in a new light,” he added.

Joining the Chief Minister in planting trees along the national highway were Agriculture Minister Ratanlal Nath and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma. The ministers reiterated the need to protect the ecological balance and combat global warming through sustained afforestation efforts. Agriculture Minister Nath stressed the importance of compensatory planting, urging that ten more should be planted for every tree felled. “Without nature’s aid, survival is impossible. Development should go hand in hand with environmental conservation,” he said.

Forest Minister Debbarma declared the event a milestone in environmental protection, noting the involvement of diverse groups, including students, BSF, CRPF, and various institutions. He also announced plans to develop one of the largest flower gardens in the northeastern region within two years. Chief Conservator of Forests R. K Shyamal and Principal Secretary Puneet Aggarwal welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of such initiatives. The event concluded with the distribution of free flowers, fruit, and tree seedlings to the citizens.

The Chief Minister was warmly welcomed upon his arrival in Fatikchara, Mohanpur, and led to the event venue in a spirited bike rally. The large turnout in Taranagar underscored the community’s enthusiasm and commitment to the mass plantation drive, marking a significant step towards a greener Tripura.
