STATE : In a significant move to promote sustainable urban mobility, the Transport Department of the Government of Tripura has announced a ban on the registration of all types of 3-wheeler passenger and goods vehicles within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area of West Tripura District. This new regulation will take effect from July 10, 2024, as per the powers conferred by Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The scope of the ban includes a wide range of 3-wheeler vehicles such as e-Rickshaws, e-Carts, e-Autos, Petrol Autos, Diesel Autos, CNG Autos, and vehicles driven on bio-fuels like methanol and ethanol. This decisive step aims to address traffic congestion and enhance public safety and convenience within the urban environment.

The notification underscores the government’s intention to manage traffic effectively and encourage alternative modes of transportation, reflecting a commitment to greater public interest. Consequently, no new registrations of the specified 3-wheeler vehicles will be processed in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area after the stipulated date.

The Transport Commissioner and the District Transport Officer (DTO) of West Tripura have been instructed to ensure strict adherence to this ban. The Transport Department will periodically review the impact of this restriction on urban mobility and retains the authority to amend the notification as necessary based on these assessments.
