The Indian Navy recently marked a poignant moment in its aviation history as it bid farewell to the UH-3H helicopter, a stalwart in maritime operations for the past 17 years. The de-induction ceremony held at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, was a somber yet celebratory occasion, honoring the helicopter’s remarkable service and contributions to naval operations.
Introduced in 2007 alongside INS Jalashwa, the UH-3H helicopter quickly established itself within the Indian Naval Aviation ranks, eventually assigned to INAS 350, christened ‘Saaras.’ Over its operational tenure, ‘Saaras’ became synonymous with strength, valour, and perseverance, embodying its motto as it undertook critical roles in Special Operations, Search and Rescue missions, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
The helicopter’s advanced capabilities were pivotal during natural disasters, where its swift Search and Rescue operations often proved decisive in saving lives. Beyond disaster response, the UH-3H contributed significantly to the security of offshore installations and special operations, cementing its legacy as a versatile and indispensable asset in safeguarding India’s maritime boundaries.
As the UH-3H helicopter takes its final bow, one of its aircraft will be permanently displayed in Visakhapatnam, serving as a testament to its service and inspiring future generations of naval aviators. The ceremony, marked by the handover of a commemorative plaque to the State Government, underscored the end of an era and the enduring impact of ‘Saaras’ on Indian Naval Aviation and the nation.
