In a tragic turn of events, northern Sikkim’s Mangan district has been hit by devastating landslides and heavy rainfall, resulting in the loss of six lives and leaving approximately 1,500 tourists stranded. The relentless downpour triggered massive landslides that led to the collapse of a newly constructed bailey bridge at Sangkalang, severing vital connections between Mangan and the towns of Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung.
These towns, known for popular tourist spots like Gurudongmar Lake and Yunthang Valley, are now cut off from the rest of the country. The collapse of the bridge has completely isolated North Sikkim, with no immediate relief in sight as rescue operations are hampered by continuous adverse weather conditions.
The situation is dire as officials and rescue teams work tirelessly to provide aid and restore connectivity. This calamity is a stark reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of human infrastructure in the face of its force.
