Jampui Hills stargazing resort opens as tourism numbers double

At 3,050 feet, Jampui Hills is already famous as Tripura’s only hill station with an orange festival. Now it wants to become the Northeast’s night-sky capital.

The new Vanghmun Observatory Resort, built by the state tourism department in collaboration with the Tripura Science Centre, opened to visitors this week. It offers twelve glass-dome cottages, a 14-inch reflecting telescope, and guided night walks led by trained astronomers.

“On a clear winter night you can see the Milky Way core from the ridge,” said project lead Dr. Ratna Datta. Booking for the first month sold out within 48 hours.
