NATIONAL: In a significant move within the aviation industry, Air India has announced the appointment of Sanjay Sharma as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective from June 10, 2024. This strategic appointment comes as part of Air India’s ongoing transformation under the Tata Group’s leadership.
Sanjay Sharma brings to the table over three decades of rich experience in corporate finance, investment banking, and real estate sectors. His previous tenure includes notable positions such as CFO at Tata Projects Ltd and Tata Realty Infrastructure Ltd as well as Managing Director and Head of Equity Capital Markets at Deutsche Bank Group.
Sharma is set to take over from Vinod Hejmadi, who has been with Air India for more than 30 years and has played a pivotal role in the airline’s transition to private ownership and its subsequent transformation. The change in guard is expected to further strengthen Air India’s financial strategies as it continues to expand both domestically and internationally.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India, expressed his confidence in Sharma’s capabilities, stating, “We are pleased to have Sanjay joining the leadership team and look forward to his contribution to the ongoing transformation at Air India.” He also extended gratitude to Vinod Hejmadi for his long service and significant contributions to the company.
The Tata Group took control of the loss-making Air India from the government in January 2022 and has since been making major structural and operational changes. These include a historic deal last year with Boeing and Airbus to acquire 470 widebody and single-aisle aircraft, marking a new era for the airline4.
As Air India gears up for this new chapter, the industry eyes are on Sharma to see how he will navigate the financial complexities of the aviation sector and contribute to the airline’s ambitious growth plans.
For Agartala Buzz, this is a story of corporate leadership, strategic appointments, and the promising future of one of India’s most iconic airlines as it soars to new heights under the stewardship of Sanjay Sharma.
