In Mumbai, the financial hub of India, a massive billboard fell on top of several people during a thunderstorm, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and numerous injuries, according to local police.
After strong winds and rain late on Monday, the billboard in the eastern neighborhood of Ghatkopar toppled, causing three houses and a gas station near a main road to fall. After the tragedy, many people were trapped, and rescue efforts continued until early on Tuesday.
In certain areas of the city, the thunderstorm caused traffic to stop completely, and it caused disturbances at one of the busiest airports in the nation.

According to Mumbai Municipal Corporation, 31 of the at least 74 persons who were injured in the accident were released from the hospital.

The enormous billboard was seen soaring in the wind for a while before it lost way and fell, as seen in news reports and social media posts.

Firefighters in Mumbai, India, on May 13, 2024, stationed near cars were crushed by a billboard that fell during a downpour.

According to the local meteorological agency, Monday was expected to bring moderate rainstorms and strong winds of up to 40–50 km/h (25–30 mph) in several areas of the Mumbai district.

Similar to other Indian cities, Mumbai is vulnerable to catastrophic flooding and rain-related mishaps during the monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September each year.
