POLITICS: In the Dhanpur and Boxanagar Assembly constituencies in the Sepahijala district, the CPI(M)-led Left Front on Sunday announced its candidates for the September 5 bye-election.

According to front convenor Narayan Kar, Kaushik Chanda will be the Left Front’s candidate from the Dhanpur constituency, and Mizan Hussain will contest from Boxanagar.

Chanda had lost the Dhanpur seat in the recent Assembly elections to Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik, but the CPI(M) was able to hold onto the seat by defeating the BJP candidate.

Mizan is the son of Boxanagar CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque, who passed away in July causing a vacancy. The bye-election in Dhanpur was necessitated after Bhoumik resigned from the Assembly days after her election.

“The two candidates will submit their nomination papers on August 16,” Narayan Kar told a press conference.

While CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury told reporters he had a meeting with two opposition parties — Tipra Motha and Congress — on Saturday and discussed the polls.
