KISHTWAR, J&K — A devastating cloudburst in Chositi village of Kishtwar district has claimed more than 60 lives, injured over 100 people, and left at least 69 missing. The disaster, which struck on Thursday along the Machail Mata pilgrimage route, unleashed flash floods that swept away homes, temples, vehicles, and even a bridge.
According to officials, the cloudburst triggered a torrent of water and debris, hitting the village with little warning. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “apocalyptic,” with fast-moving currents uprooting trees, smashing through buildings, and carrying away everything in their path.
Rescue operations are underway with teams from the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers working tirelessly to locate survivors. Heavy machinery is being used to clear debris, but officials say the remote location and damaged infrastructure are slowing efforts.
District authorities have set up relief camps for the displaced, while medical teams are treating the injured. Many pilgrims on the Machail Mata route were caught in the disaster, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.
Chief Minister and Union Home Minister have expressed condolences, assuring full support for relief and rehabilitation. The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of Himalayan regions to extreme weather events, which experts link to climate change and erratic monsoon patterns.
