The Union Cabinet has given the green light for the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, making it the second IIM in the North East and the 22nd across India.
With an investment of over ₹500 crore, the new campus aims to enhance management education, foster entrepreneurship, and drive economic growth in the region.
Officials say the Guwahati IIM will cater to the growing demand for world-class management professionals, particularly in the rapidly developing sectors of the North East. The institution is expected to attract top-tier faculty, foster cutting-edge research, and create new opportunities for collaboration between academia, industry, and government.
The move is part of a broader strategy to expand premier higher education institutions across India’s underserved regions, ensuring equitable access and fostering talent outside traditional metropolitan hubs.
Once operational, IIM Guwahati is expected to produce highly skilled business leaders and serve as a catalyst for innovation and job creation in Assam and beyond.
