First Freight Train Reaches Kashmir Valley from Punjab

In a milestone for connectivity and trade in Jammu & Kashmir, the first loaded freight train arrived at Anantnag railway station on Saturday, August 9, 2025. The development marks the official commencement of freight operations on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL), following approval by the Northern Railway zone earlier this month.

The train, originating from Punjab, carried essential goods and supplies, highlighting the potential of rail connectivity to boost economic activity in the region. The freight service is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs, ensure faster delivery of goods, and open up new opportunities for local producers and traders.

Railway officials described the event as a major step toward integrating the Kashmir Valley more closely with the national supply chain. “This is not just about rail transport — it’s about economic growth, accessibility, and creating opportunities for the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” said an official from the Northern Railway.

The USBRL project, a critical part of Indian Railways’ push to strengthen connectivity to the valley, has been under development for years, overcoming difficult terrain, challenging weather, and complex engineering demands. With freight operations now underway at Anantnag, the project has moved closer to its long-term goal of seamless passenger and goods movement across the region.

Local businesses and traders have welcomed the new service, expressing optimism that it will bring fresh economic opportunities, improve supply chain reliability, and make Kashmir’s products more competitive in markets outside the region.
