Meet Binod Chaudhary: Nepal’s Only Billionaire Who Built a Global Empire with Instant Noodles

While India’s richest include industrial titans like Mukesh Ambani (USD 107.1 billion) and Gautam Adani (USD 78 billion), Nepal’s sole billionaire is Binod Chaudhary, with a net worth of approximately USD 2 billion (about Rs 16,700 crore), according to Forbes.

The Wai Wai Phenomenon

Chaudhary is best known for creating the Wai Wai noodles brand. A household name that successfully rivaled global instant noodle giants like Maggi. His entrepreneurial journey began in Kathmandu, inspired both by his family’s business roots and iconic figures such as JRD Tata and Amitabh Bachchan.

It was during a trip to Thailand that he encountered instant noodles — an idea that sparked the creation of Wai Wai. The brand quickly gained popularity across Nepal, then made major inroads into India and international markets, becoming a staple snack for millions.

Diversifying Beyond Food

But Chaudhary’s ambitions went far beyond noodles. Over the years, he expanded into multiple industries. He formed early partnerships with National Panasonic, introduced Suzuki cars to the Nepali market, and later moved into banking, hospitality, and real estate.

His conglomerate, the Chaudhary Group, now oversees 143 luxury hotels worldwide, including properties managed in collaboration with India’s Taj Hotels. A landmark partnership in 2019 with the Tata Group led to the opening of the Taj Jumeirah Lakes Towers hotel in Dubai, which went on to receive international recognition in 2020.

Early Struggles and Lasting Legacy

Born into a business family in Kathmandu, Chaudhary took charge of the family enterprise at a young age after his father fell seriously ill. He abandoned his dream of becoming a chartered accountant to step into the world of entrepreneurship.

With vision and determination, he transformed his family’s modest business into a global powerhouse, contributing significantly to Nepal’s economy. Today, under his leadership, the Chaudhary Group operates over 80 companies across more than 30 countries.

Binod Chaudhary’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, innovation, and the ability to think globally while staying rooted in one’s homeland.
