For the first in Tripura, a team of cardiac surgery at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBP) Agartala completed a rare operation on a heart tumor.

A 35-year-old lady, Renu Begum, a resident of West Noabadi, was suffering from heart problems for several months. Due to that, she had to be admitted to the hospital several times with breathing problems.

Examination at the CTVS Department revealed a large tumor in the left ventricle of her heart, which was blocking her Mitral Valve. CTVS department hastily prepared her for surgery.

Similarly, on March 20, a cardiac surgery team led by Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya successfully removed this 200-gram heart tumor through a 6-hour open heart surgery. In medical terms, its name is ‘Cardiac Myxoma’. It is a rare heart disease. This heart tumor can happen to fewer than one in every twenty lakhs. Easy panting, shortness of breath, and palpitation in the chest can be common symptoms.

It is the first time that an operation of this kind has been successfully carried out in the state of Tripura. The patient is now recovering slowly in the ICU after the operation, breathing and eating normally.

Apart from cardiac surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya, cardiac anesthesiologist Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, Dr. Joydeep Debnath, perfusionist Sujan Sahu, surgeon assistant Sudipta Mondal, scrub nurse Zahir Hossain, Saurabh Shil, Arpita Sarkar, Mousumi Debnath, Anna Bahadur Jamatia, anesthesia technician Joydeep Chakraborty, Ratan Mondal, Amrit Murasingh Coordinator Abhishek Dutta, Richashree Sarkar, etc. were in this operation team.

Dr. Bhattacharya thanked all the officials concerned, staff nurses, and the patient’s family for their cooperation in the surgery. The patient’s family expressed satisfaction as the successful operation was free. The director of the health department informed this news in a press release.
