Veda Krishnamurthy Retires from International Cricket at 32, Just Two Months Before World Cup

With the ICC Women’s World Cup just around the corner, Indian cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy has announced her retirement from international cricket at the age of 32. The experienced middle-order batter made the announcement through a heartfelt social media post on Friday.

“Not Stepping Away from Cricket, Just a New Chapter”

In her emotional farewell note, Veda wrote, “From a small-town girl with big dreams to proudly donning the India jersey — I’m forever grateful to cricket for the life lessons, friendships, and unforgettable memories. The time has come to step away from the game. But I’m not stepping away from cricket. I’ll always be by India’s side, by the team’s side.”

Accompanying the message were personal reflections and photos from her cricketing journey. She added, “I never imagined that someone from a narrow alley would one day play in grand stadiums. Cricket gave me more than a career — it gave me identity and taught me how to fight.”

A Decade of Dedication

Veda Krishnamurthy represented India in international cricket from 2011 to 2020. She played 48 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 76 T20 Internationals (T20Is), scoring 829 runs in ODIs and 875 runs in T20s.

She made her international debut against England in 2011 at just 18 years old, marking the occasion with a confident 51-run knock. One of her career highlights came in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final, where her aggressive 70-run innings against Australia played a crucial role in guiding India to the final.

Veda remained a regular feature in the Indian squad until the 2020 T20 World Cup final, which turned out to be her last international appearance.

Gratitude and Future Commitment

In her post, Veda expressed gratitude to her family, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and all her teammates who supported her throughout her journey.

While stepping away from playing at the highest level, she made it clear that her involvement with cricket is far from over, hinting at future contributions to the game in other roles.
