Tripura Achieves Milestone in Solar Energy Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Tripura is making notable progress under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with 15,730 households registered for the scheme so far, according to official reports.

Out of these, 591 rooftop solar installations have been completed, and 516 beneficiaries have already received their government subsidies. Notably, 117 consumers have managed to reduce their electricity bills to zero this month alone, collectively earning ₹43,545 by selling surplus solar energy back to the grid. The earnings have already been credited directly to their accounts, as per an official press release.

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) reported that the state has now achieved 2 megawatts of solar power generation capacity, marking a significant step toward energy independence and sustainability.

This advancement is part of the national rooftop solar initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024. The scheme encourages households across the country to install rooftop solar panels, enabling them to reduce or eliminate their electricity bills and generate income through the sale of surplus power.

Each eligible household can receive government subsidies up to ₹85,800 under the scheme.

A 1-kilowatt solar unit is capable of producing around 100 units of electricity per month, which is sufficient for the average household’s monthly needs. Any excess electricity can be fed into the grid, allowing households to earn additional income.

Looking ahead, TSECL aims to expand Tripura’s solar capacity to 50 megawatts within the next year, potentially positioning the state as a leader in clean and self-sustaining energy generation.
