India’s Highest Airfield Near LAC in Ladakh Set to Open by October

In a significant step towards strengthening national security and improving regional connectivity, India’s highest airfield at Mudh-Nyoma in eastern Ladakh is on track to become fully operational by October 2025. Located at an altitude of approximately 13,700 feet, this Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) is the closest such facility to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The newly constructed 3-kilometre-long runway is designed to handle military and emergency aircraft operations, enabling rapid deployment of troops and resources to India’s northernmost borders. Approved in 2021 with a sanctioned budget of around ₹214 crore, the Nyoma airfield is a critical strategic asset in the high-altitude terrain.

Due to the region’s challenging geography and limited road access, the airfield will significantly reduce response times for defense forces, particularly in remote and mountainous areas. It is expected to enhance India’s operational readiness in border zones.

The development comes as India continues to ramp up its border infrastructure in response to the standoff with China that began more than four years ago. In recent years, the government has focused heavily on building roads, tunnels, and bridges across Ladakh to improve logistics and defence preparedness.

Nyoma’s strategic relevance has grown significantly following recent military disengagements at Demchok and Depsang Plains. With patrols now resumed in those areas, the airfield’s proximity offers a crucial advantage for swift troop movements in the event of renewed tensions.

Beyond its military utility, the high-altitude Nyoma ALG is also expected to support civilian air services, helping connect isolated communities and improve access to essential goods and services in the region.
