Indian Army Receives First Batch of Apache Helicopters, Painted in Desert Camouflage

New Delhi:In a major boost to the Indian Army’s aerial combat strength, the first batch of three Apache attack helicopters has arrived from the United States. The cutting-edge choppers, finished in desert camouflage, landed at the Hindon Airbase on Tuesday, transported aboard an Antonov cargo aircraft.

It marks the Indian Army’s debut in operating Apache helicopters, widely regarded as among the most advanced combat helicopters in the world. The Indian Air Force already has 22 Apache helicopters in active service.

These newly arrived helicopters, often referred to as “flying tanks,” will be stationed in Jodhpur, strategically close to India’s western border with Pakistan.

“A milestone moment for Indian Army as the first batch of Apache helicopters for Army Aviation arrives in India today. These state-of-the-art platforms will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the #IndianArmy,” the Army said in a statement while sharing the first images of the helicopters on Indian soil.

Manufactured by Boeing, the Apache helicopters will now undergo a series of acceptance trials, which include thorough testing and evaluation before formal induction.

These three aircraft are part of a $600 million deal signed during US President Donald Trump’s visit to India in 2020. The agreement included the purchase of six Apache helicopters for the Indian Army. Although the first delivery was initially scheduled for May-June 2024, delays caused by global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical issues pushed the timeline back.

The Indian Air Force currently operates two Apache squadrons, located in Pathankot (Punjab) and Jorhat (Assam).

Apache helicopters are designed for multi-role operations, including offensive strikes, security patrols, reconnaissance, and peacekeeping missions. They come equipped with advanced targeting systems capable of identifying and engaging enemy positions in all weather conditions. Additional features include night vision navigation, cutting-edge communication and sensor systems, and a full suite of modern weaponry.

With these powerful helicopters now in its arsenal, the Indian Army significantly strengthens its tactical airpower and combat readiness in critical regions.
