Pradip Dutta Bhowmik Passes Away at 73: Tributes Pour In for a Media Stalwart

Agartala, July 20: The passing of veteran journalist Pradip Dutta Bhowmik, former News Editor of Tripura’s largest circulated daily Dainik Sambad, has left a deep void in the state’s media fraternity. Bhowmik, 73, breathed his last on Friday at AIIMS, New Delhi, following a prolonged illness.

A man known for his dedication, discipline, and integrity, Pradip Dutta Bhowmik served the media industry for decades, steering clear of controversies and remaining committed to journalistic ethics. He was the nephew of late Bhupen Dutta Bhowmik, a towering figure in Tripura’s media landscape and the founding editor of Dainik Sambad.

Born on January 1, 1953, in Alkimura village of Comilla district (now in Bangladesh), Pradip migrated to Tripura with his family during the post-Partition unrest. He completed his early education at Netaji Subhas Vidyaniketan, pursued science at Bodhjung Boys’ School, and later earned a degree in bioscience from MBB College in 1973.

His journalistic journey began at Dainik Sambad under the guidance of his uncle. Although he briefly worked as a school teacher at Manu Bazar School in Sabroom starting in 1979, his passion for journalism brought him back to Dainik Sambad. Rising steadily through the ranks, he was appointed News Editor in 1988, and later became the Printer and Publisher of the newspaper in 1996—a role he held until his passing.

Bhowmik’s relentless work ethic eventually took a toll on his health. He was admitted to AIIMS in early April with serious complications. Despite efforts by doctors, he passed away around 3:50 PM on July 19.

His death has been widely mourned across Tripura’s journalistic and political circles. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, along with several VVIPs, colleagues, and well-wishers, expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the late individual. Offices of Dainik Sambad, North East Colours, and Imprint observed moments of grief and remembrance.

Bhowmik is survived by his wife, a son, a married daughter, and a wide circle of friends and relatives. His mortal remains are expected to arrive in Agartala today, where they will be kept at the Agartala Press Club for fellow journalists and admirers to pay their final respects.
