Centre Approves Construction of 2.35 Lakh Houses Under PMAY-U 2.0

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Central Government approved the construction of 2.35 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0). The decision was made during the third meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), chaired by Mr. Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), according to an official statement.

A total of 2,34,864 houses have been sanctioned across nine states: Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Construction of these homes will be under two key verticals of the PMAY-U 2.0 — Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP).

With this latest approval, the cumulative number of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 has reached 7,09,979 units.

A significant portion of the newly approved dwellings — over 1.25 lakh units — have been allocated to women beneficiaries, including single women and widows. Additionally, 44 houses have been earmarked for transgender individuals.

The allocation also reflects inclusivity across communities:

42,400 houses have been sanctioned for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries,

17,574 for Scheduled Tribes, and

1,13,414 for members of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 aims to support one crore families by providing financial assistance to build or purchase pucca (permanent) homes in urban areas. Beneficiaries can receive up to ₹2.5 lakh per housing unit as Central assistance. The scheme is designed to uplift economically weaker sections, lower-income groups, and middle-income families by offering them safe and secure housing, thereby enabling them to improve their standard of living.

Originally launched in June 2015, PMAY-U was later revamped as PMAY-U 2.0 to extend housing benefits to an additional one crore families belonging to the EWS, LIG, and MIG segments. To date, over 93.19 lakh houses have already been constructed and handed over to beneficiaries under the original PMAY-U initiative.
