On Parakram Diwas, the 21 largest unnamed islands of Andaman & Nicobar Islands were named after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees today in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the program, the Prime Minister also unveiled the model of the National Memorial dedicated to Netaji to be built on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep.
 
The islands have been named after various Awardees like Captain Vikram Batra, Lance Naik Albert Ekka, Major Somnath Sharma, Subedar, and Hony Captain (then Lance Naik) Karam Singh, etc.
 
The largest unnamed island was named after the first Param Vir Chakra awardee Major Somnath, and the second largest unnamed island was named after the second Param Vir Chakra awardee.
 
The Prime Minister said that our armed forces have proved their bravery on all the fronts. “It is the duty of the country that the soldiers who dedicated themselves to these national defence operations should be widely recognized along with the contributions of the army”, said the Prime Minister, adding, “Today the country is fulfilling that responsibility and it is being recognized in the name of soldiers and armies.”
